The weekend of my son’s first birthday we drove from our rental home in Virginia down to North Carolina to meet our Standard Poodle puppy Beau. This post is so you can also meet Beau!
Picking out Beau
We originally went to the breeder with the intention of purchasing a female poodle. I was feeling done with male dogs for a while after living with my German Shepherd again for the past year.
We were playing to the two available females. Both were a beautiful, very light cream color. I could tell my husband wasn’t sold on their color, so we asked for the last available male to be brought out as well.
She brought him up to us and Big A instantly fell in love. He was a great mix of the personalities of his sisters, and we were confident he would fit in well with our family.
We began our two hour drive home with smiles plastered across our faces.
Beau’s Scare
We took Beau to the vet at the end of the first week of having him, since that was their soonest available appointment. He had ear infections in both ears, worms and Giardia, a parasitic infection found in puppies. We also expressed concern for his weight and the vet agreed he could weigh more. Beau was prescribed antibiotics and dewormer, and we began regular flea and tick treatment and HeartGuard.
After about four days we noticed improvement in his energy, and after almost two weeks we noticed improvement in his weight as well.
This experience taught us there can always be unexpected situations with new pets.
Beau’s New Home
Beau quickly acclimated to every routine thrown at him. He proved in a short time how intelligent and willing to learn he is. Potty training took about three weeks, while crate training only took about three nights. Manners came slowly but surely as well.
We prioritized teaching him basic commands and leash manners, as well as small things such as sitting at the door before going outside. We believe manners like these help prevent accidents like Beau escaping while guests are coming in or out, or tripping up the kids if they’re going outside at the same time. One of the slower to learn skills has been manners during brushing sessions and grooming.
Growing Strong
Since I’ve finally gotten to publish this post, Beau is now almost five months old and growing like crazy. He’s living up to his “Poodle Standards” and knows he deserves nothing but the best. He’s always happy to play with the kids or run in the yard with us.
I’ll be sure to post more updates about his personality and looks as he gets bigger. Having Beau in our first home with us makes everything feel that much more complete with our family.
