Best Friends Reunited – My Weekend in Florida
How do I even begin to describe seeing my best friend for the first time in over six years? We both knew that no matter what we did or didn’t do this weekend we were just grateful for the opportunity to converse in person instead of over text. We were grateful for our sons to meet each other. And I’m incredibly grateful to actually see the life I’ve been hearing about for years. Here’s a little bit about my weekend in Florida with my best friend.
Travelling to Florida
I was able to purchase a round trip ticket through Spirit Airlines for Lil’ C and myself for $72, which is what prompted this trip in the first place. Monica and I were talking about seeing each other, and when I actually looked at the flights I thought, ” oh my goodness, I can actually afford this right now”. I worked nearly double my regular hours at my work from home job for two weeks straight before my trip. This allowed me to pay for the plane ticket, the extra gas to drive to and from the airport and for some extras during the trip. Of course my weekend getaway was well worth it.
We opted to drive to larger airports to save money on the flight. The times were early morning and later at night. This worked out perfectly to have as much time as possible together and to avoid traffic getting to and from the airports. These flight times also meant that Lil’ C and I were both tired during the flights. It allowed him to get some good naps, and gave me a break without having to worry about entertaining him on a plane.
My Tips for Flying Spirit
First and foremost, always arrive early, especially when flying Spirit! I recommend arriving at least 30 minutes earlier than you usually would. If you’re flying with a lap infant (under 2 years old) then an attendant has to print your boarding pass out for you. I waited for an hour in line to speak to the attendant when I was leaving Orlando. Good thing I was there more than two hours before my flight’s departure!
My second tip is to pack an empty water bottle and some snacks. Since having kids, I never travel without water and a lighth snack, but this is especially true for during a Spirit flight. Of course your water bottle has to be empty to pass through security, but afterwards you an head to a water bottle filling station to have it ready to go for the flight. If you’re like me, you’re flying Spirit because of the cheaper ticket price, which means paying extra for drinks and snacks is not on your agenda. Bring what you can from home to keep you and your little one happy and entertained for the flight.
Finally, if you can travel with just a personal item and forego a carry on or checked bag, DO IT! The personal item is the only thing you can bring for free, and it is a reasonable size. I was able to comfortably pack for my son and I using our regular diaper bag. If you do need a carry on or checked bag, make sure you correctly measure it and pay for it ahead of time to avoid a substantial price increase at the gate. For my flight the price of the carry on jumped to $99 to purchase at the gate, remember my ticket was only $72.
For a weekend trip, this was an ideal plane ticket purchase. I would absolutely choose to fly Spirit again, so long as I’m prepared as I was for this trip.
Weekend Full of Fun
Friday
We started with stopping at a local Super Target. I’ve never been to a super Target so that was an experience itself. We bought snacks and drinks for the weekend. I found the cutest Bluey plates for the kids, and an adorable Ghost Mug for myself. Even with just my diaper bag, I easily fit them inside to bring them home. My Ghost Mug is also featured in My Pumpkin Roll recipe. After Target we returned to Monica’s house. Lil’ C and I took a much needed nap while Monica ran some errands to further prepare for our weekend. We ended the night with Pizza Hut, Stella Rosa wine, delicious cupcakes and watching movies!
Saturday
Our second day we went to the beach located on Patrick Space Force Base. We drew in the sand, found seashells on the shore and drank some iced coffees. Later on in the day, after getting cleaned up a nap, we also went to Dixie Crossroads. I don’t regularly eat seafood, so I tried bacon wrapped shrimp for the first time! I would definitely recommend this delicious food combination to others. Before heading home to Monica’s we grabbed more drinks from the gas station, where I encountered the cutest little native lizards. They were surprisingly shy for where they decided to hang out.
Sunday – Leaving Florida
On Sunday morning, we packed up and went to Walt Disney World’s Resort in Orlando to check out some shops. We opted out of going into the actual theme park for the sake of time and money. Some of my favorites were the M&M’s World store and the Coca-Cola Stores. We didn’t have enough time to wait in line to enter the Lego Store. Of course since I was flying out of Orlando we didn’t have to drive too far to the Airport, which was perfect to get there early as mentioned in my Tips for Flying Spirit section of this post. My weekend in Florida was quickly
Overall my weekend in Florida was a blast! Not just because it was my first time visiting, but because of the fun and lasting memories we made just by existing with each other rather than texting. I can’t wait for the next time we get to reunite!
